Colder and colder!

This is day 2 of our trip through the country which the local people call Macedonia.  Yesterday was intense; travelling from 8:00am until 3:00pm on our World March Bus™, with brief stops to cross the border, to meet the local authorities in 2 towns and then to finish in the beautiful lakeside town of Ohrid [...]

What’s in a name?

There are 2 things which have struck me strongly on this Balkan section of the March so far.  One is the name you give to different territories and the other is the borders between countries.

I almost got into trouble in Turkey with this theme and in Greece we’ve also been warned to be careful with [...]

Balkans day 1 – March day 25

After a week with the base team in Japan, Korea and Russia, now I’m in Istanbul where I’ve come to spend 12 days with the Balkan team to write news articles for Pressenza.  Actually, I say I’m in Istanbul, but as I write I’m on the bus leaving the city after only 30 hours here.

I [...]

Norrköping (Sweden)

From Helsinki, Petra and I have moved on the Norrköping (Sweden) in a small propeller plane. After so many journeys, it’s like coming home.

Here we were received by a charming community of Latin Americans, who are responsible for the events here.

We are staying in the house of Ilva (Swedish woman with a Colombian father) with [...]

A call from the Bank…

“Hello Mr Robinson, this is HSBC bank.  Sorry for troubling you.  Would it be possible to confirm some unusual transactions that have appeared on your account in recent days?”

“Yes, go ahead.  Right now I’m in Prague airport about to board a plane to Istanbul.”

“Ok, I’ll make it quick.  Last week did you pay for internet [...]

Pierre’s last hour (26th October 12.15pm)

Pierre has just called us from St. Petersburg.  It seems that he HASN’T found his passport.  It looks like it’s probably been stolen, so he thinks.

The good news, is that in the Belgian consulate they’ve confirmed that they can give him a provisional copy in one hour, that will be valid for 6 months travelling.

If [...]

From St. Petersburg to Tallin

We’ve only spent 30 hours in St. Petersburg, which is a shame because from the little we’ve seen, it seems to be a lovely city and much more habitable than Moscow. In Tallin, it’s even worse, we’re not even there for 24 hours.

From St Petersburg to Tallin we’re travelling in a bus, from which I’m [...]

Why do you do it?

We’ve just finished the Asian leg. We were thinking right from the start that this would be the hardest of all, but it turned out to be enthralling. From our western outlook, the logistical conditions have been on occasioins, well below what we expected, but today, only a few days later, they’ve lost all importance [...]

Pierre left behind in St. Petersburg

In a journey like ours, one of the worst things that can happen is loose sight of your passport.  This is exactly what has happened to Pierre (the Belgian)

This morning, after breakfast and already with suitcases prepared for getting on the bus, came the moment of revision.  Someone, usually Rafa, calls out, “Ok, let’s see [...]
